Meeting for Anti-Slavery Day at Links centre

Activists from the Stop The Traffik community group Craigavon ACT (Active Communities against Trafficking) are playing their part to inform the public that men, women and children are being recruited and then tricked or forced into exploitation on a street near them.

They are joining with other local groups across the country who are acting together on the UK’s second official Anti-Slavery Day to make their communities harder for traffickers to hide themselves and their victims.

204 years after William Wilberforce helped outlaw the slave trade in this country, much more still needs to be done to tackle modern-day human trafficking. Craigavon ACT is playing their part, and inviting local residents to get involved.

They will be meeting as a group at Links Youth Centre, Castle Lane, Lurgan at 7pm on Tuesday, October 18 and then dispersing out into the community to distribute fliers and stickers through the doors of different housing estates in Craigavon, Lurgan and Portadown. They are hoping to also give out information in taxi ranks as well as bus and train stations.

Mel Wiggins of Craigavon ACT said: “We would love to members of the public come along with us to help spread the word of this horrific crime happening on our doorsteps.

“Local residents need to know what human trafficking is, how it affects them, and what they can do about it.”
