Meeting over flooding in The Glens

Moyle District Council has agreed to facilitate a multi-agency meeting involving Roads Service, N.I. Water and Rivers Agency to discuss the re-occurring problem of flooding in The Glens area.

The issue was raised at a Moyle District Council meeting on Monday, July 23rd by Glens Sinn Fein councillor Colum Thompson, speaking after the meeting councillor Thompson expressed his satisfaction with the agreement.

“It is high time this issue was addressed, we are often told that flooding is an act of God or a freak incident but it is happening too often for this to be the case,” Cllr Thompson explained.

“In little over a year as a councillor I have witnessed three serious flooding incidents in The Glens. During the most recent incident of flooding the damage was widespread with homes and businesses in Gortaclee Road, Mill Street, High Street, Shore Street and Tavhaghan in Cushendall and Layde Road and Knocknacarry in Cushendun not just suffering cosmetic damage but in some cases structural damage.

“It has gotten to the stage where business owners and residents fear for their property every time we have heavy rainfall. The agencies must come together to improve infrastructure so that people no longer have to suffer the effects of flooding.
