Megan joins Ulster Youth Training Choir

A LARNE teenager has been selected to join one of Northern Ireland’s most prestigious choirs for young people and is to perform in two upcoming summer concerts.

Megan McKeown, who just completed her GCSE studies at St Killian’s College, has spoken of her delight at being chosen for the Ulster Youth Training Choir (UYTC) along with three of her fellow pupils.

The 16-year-old will now join the best of Northern Ireland’s young singers and receive training from some of the leading choral and vocal coaches from throughout the UK and Ireland.

And Larne Borough Council has provided Megan with a further boost by contributing a grant of £250 towards the overall costs of taking part in the choir.

The UYTC will hold a week-long summer course at St Killian’s starting on Saturday, July 28, followed by a concert in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh, on Friday, August 3. A second summer concert in conjunction with the Ulster Youth Choir will take place at Fisherwick Presbyterian Church, Belfast on August 17.

Megan told the Times: “I am really excited to have been chosen for this year’s choir, having missed out on the opportunity in 2011.

“Singing is something I have loved since I was a little girl and I am now getting ready to study A-level performing arts at Ulidia College in Carrickfergus.”

Megan, who attends an extra-curricular performing arts group, already has some stage experience under her belt, most notably a role in the locally-produced musical Behind the Dream

This production, penned by local singer-songwriters Elser Burke and Richard Geddes, was very well received during its debut showing at the Auditorium in Larne back in October.
