Megaw Park - a quality sports, play and recreational facility

Speaking on a recent visit to mark the official launch of the facility Mr Kennedy said: “The upgrading of Megaw Park has proved one of our most popular park improvements, attracting a large number of visitors on a daily basis.

“I am delighted the park has got this significant upgrade with the injection of over £1.25 million investment by Council.

“It will be of benefit to the town and local area for years to come.”

The revamped facility includes a new pavilion and changing facilities, a new sand matress soccer pitch, new tennis courts and a range of modern equipment to test the abilities and fuel the imagination of children, teenagers and adults alike.

The sunny weather during the Easter holidays saw the park packed to capacity with youngsters enjoying the facilities.

Many families had travelled from Coleraine and Portrush to use the playpark.

The Megaw Park playing fields have a long association with the community.

Originally provided in 1934 by the Hon Mr Justice Megaw in memory of his aunt and uncle, the town council took responsibility for the facility in the 1950’s.

William James Megaw, a wholesale grocer and local merchant in the town, was Chairman of the Urban District Council 1888-1920.
