Members' night at Gracehill & Galgorm

THERE was an impressive display of silverware on the top table at Gracehill & Galgorm Women's institute June meeting.

Nina Marrs opened the meeting - Members Night – and congratulated those who had won the trophies, the Runciman Bowl (Margaret Johnston, Persis Coulter,Betty Monteith and Janet Wilson) at Ballymena Show, The Jane Black trophy at the Area Spring meeting, and the Carryduff Cup (WI trophy for scrap book).

Federation Vice Chairman Margery Thompson and Rae Hood judged members’ craft work for the year and Averil Chapman was the winner of the Hood Salver.

Anne Sheppard introduced the speaker, Jane Allen, who told us ‘Her Story’ - how she started in her successful family catering business and being brought up on a farm had learned the ethics of hard work and communication which had been her foundation in starting in business. Flexibility was also a necessary attribute to have in business.We were interested to hear of the dignitaries she had catered for during her career.

The Institute and Gracehill School have had close connection for some 22 years.

Each year P7 pupils submit themed art work for competition judged by the committee. Teachers will be congratulated and thanked for stimulating interest in this project when Averil Chapman and Jean Cushnie present the prizes at school .

Winners of the monthly competition, Liz Hughes, Nina Marrs and Margaret Johnston, were announced and members served a delicious supper. The meeting ended and the Institute adjourned for the summer months.
