Members of Magheralin Parish are ‘Slumming It’ in 
support of Habitat NI

Members of Magheralin Parish are urging local people to get involved in Habitat NI’s latest fundraising event ‘Shack Attack.’

Shack Attack is a unique, fun outdoor event which challenges teams of four people to design and build their own make-shift shelter using only whatever scrap or donated materials they can find. The teams are then challenged to camp out overnight in their shelters, experiencing the hardship faced by millions of people around the world every day.

The team from St Patrick’s & St Ronan’s Church, Magheralin and St Colman’s Church, Kilwarlin has signed up for the challenge and are calling on local people to do the same. The parish took part in a similar challenge last year building their own shack in the church grounds and staying in it overnight to raise vital funds to support the work of Habitat.

Caitriona Hughes is a member of the Social Justice Committee within the parish and is encouraging everyone to get involved in this unique event. “The team last year really enjoyed taking part in Shack Attack and has motivated younger members to get involved this year.

“It’s a great chance for everyone in the community to support Habitat and raise vital funds to change the lives of families trapped in poverty housing.

“Everyone really enjoyed the challenge of building our own shelter last year and there’s sure to be some friendly competition to see who can build the best shack this year. I would urge everyone to get 3 friends together and get involved, it’s sure to be a really fun weekend while of course raising vital funds for such a worthwhile cause” said Caitrona.

Shack Attack will take place Saturday May 17 to Sunday May 18 in Wallace Park, Lisburn.

The event is open to everyone (over 16’s) and it’s free to take part.

Each team is challenged to raise sponsorship for example £250 will raise a roof on a Habitat home, £500 will provide essential tools for 20 families and £1,235 will build a Habitat home in the developing world.
