Lajos Mate (29), whose address was given as Albert Street, Lurgan, was fined £250, given six points, and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy for driving without insurance on January 9 this year.

Kozak Lajos Gabor (21), also with an address at Albert Street, Lurgan, was fined £25, with a £15 offender’s levy, and banned from driving for 28 days for permitting him to drive without insurance.

The court heard a police mobile patrol saw a car being driven in Church Place, Lurgan, and checks
revealed there was no insurance.

They stopped it in Edward Street. Mate was driving but said it was not his vehicle, it belong to his cousin, Gabor.

They said they were going to get insurance at some stage and believed that they could drive to go and get insurance.

Mr Conor Downey, representing the defendants, said they had bought the vehicle together and insurance had now been taken out.

They were under the misapprehension that once there was insurance on a vehicle it carried on, he added.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said that because Gabor had no licence he could not give points but would impose a short period of disqualification instead.
