Meningitis Research charity celebrates 25th anniversary

The Meningitis Research Foundation is asking the East Antrim public to help commemorate its 25th anniversary year by participating in its events or organising a fundraising event.

Over the past 25 years, the Meningitis Research Foundation has been funding research, raising awareness and supporting individuals and families who have been affected by meningitis and septicaemia.

The charity estimates that around 3,200 people get bacterial meningitis and septicaemia in the UK and Ireland each year. Meningitis and septicaemia can affect anyone, but babies, young children, teenagers and young adults are most at risk.

Around one in ten people who contract meningitis or septicaemia die, and a third of surviviors suffer life-altering effects such as brain damage, loss of limbs and hearing loss.

The Meningitis Research Foundation is currently funding 17 research projects into the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia.

The group has spent over £16.5 million on research since launching in 1989, and spends around £1 million annually supporting those affected and raising awareness.

It also operates a freefone helpline for the general public and health professionals.

The charity would like to thank the members and supporters who have fundraised and donated on its behalf, and says that it still needs the public’s help to continue its work.
