Meningitis walk thanks from chief executive

THE chief executive of Meningitis UK has said a huge thank you to everyone who took part in the Bordering on a Vaccine Walk earlier this year, which stretched 201 miles from Londonderry to Rostrevor.

More than 100 people, many who had experienced the devastation of meningitis first-hand, took part at various stages over nine days and helped to raise a staggering £40,000.

This included bucket collections of £963 on the second day between Limavady and Portrush on May 29 and £2,670 between Portrush and Ballyvoy the following day.

Steve Dayman, chief executive of Meningitis UK said: “I walked the entire route and was extremely grateful to everyone who supported us, either by taking part, making a donation or by sponsoring a friend or colleague.

“All money raised on the walk will go towards our Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign, which aims to raise £7million to fund lifesaving research into developing a vaccine against all forms of meningitis and associated diseases. The number ‘4’ signifies the devastating fact that that meningitis can kill in under four hours.

“Without the continued support from members of the public and volunteers we would not be able to continue our work, which will hopefully save thousands of lives in the future.”
