Mervyn's first class day out with Royal Mail

Mervyn Storey MLA is one of a number of Northern Ireland politicians being invited to go out with postmen and women across the UK to see the lengths Royal Mail goes to, to deliver the post.

The purpose of the visits is to give politicians a unique insight into the challenges of delivering mail to every house and business in their constituency, six days a week.

Ian Dunseith, Royal Mail Ballymoney Delivery Manager, who briefed Mr Storey before he set off on his walk said: “We’re delighted that Mervyn Storey MLA is taking the time to experience the everyday challenges faced by our delivery postmen and women.

“The visit gave us the opportunity to show Mr Storey how we have transformed and modernized our business.

“We have investing in new sorting and delivery equipment as we continue to respond to the changing nature of the modern postbag.

“We are delivering more parcels and fewer letters than ever before and the tools for the job need to reflect that.”

Mervyn Storey MLA said: “I was delighted to meet local postmen and women, who not only deliver the mail but play an important part in communities right across North Antrim.

“I joined local postie Mark McCook who delivers the mail to my constituents in Ballymoney and he gave me an insight into the work involved in delivering the mail on a daily basis.

“Our postmen and women go out in all weathers, and I thank them for all the work they do.”

Royal Mail is continuing to transform its operation, which means every part of the process from collecting, transporting, sorting and delivering the mail has been improved to increase the efficiency of its business.
