Mid and East Antrim Council candidates seeking your votes this May

With the election for the new Mid and East Antrim Council now less than 50 days away, candidates are ramping up their efforts to secure vital votes.

As the countdown to the local government election continues, the Larne Times takes a look at the some of the people who will be vying for your support come May 22.

DUP

The party, which currently holds four seats on Larne Borough Council, will be seeking to ensure its dominace carries over to the newly created super council.

With veteran members Cllr Bobby McKee and Ald Winston Fulton deciding not to stand for election to the new council, the party has selected two fresh faces.

First-timers Rev Paul Reid and Matthew Scott will be going before the electorate in Larne Lough district electoral area (DEA), alongside long-standing member Cllr Gregg McKeen.

Meanwhile, Gordon Lyons and Cllr Drew Niblock will be representing the party in the Coast Road DEA.

Ulster Unionist

The party has selected ex-Mayor of Larne Andrew Wilson as a candidate for Larne Lough.

Mr Wilson lost his seat on the council after a switch from Larne Lough to the Coast Road DEA in the 2011 election.

Also standing in Larne Lough will be former deputy mayor Cllr Mark McKinty, while current Mayor Cllr Maureern Morrow will be running in Coast Road.

Long serving member Ald Roy Beggs will be bowing out of politics at the end of his current term.

Sinn Fein

Cllr James McKeown, who was co-opted onto the council in 2011 after party colleague Oliver McMullan MLA resigned his seat, will be seeking re-election on Coast Road.

The party will also be fielding candidate Sean Waide in Larne Lough.

SDLP

Cllr Martin Wilson, who was first elected to Larne Borough Council in 2001, will be seeking re-election in the Coast Road DEA.

Alliance

The party will be putting forward Cllr Gerardine Mulvenna for the Coast Road, while Cllr Michael Lynch will face the electorate in Larne Lough, alongside Whitehead man Robert Logan.

TUV

With Ald Jack McKee standing down from Larne Council after more than 40 years of service, the party has selected Ruth Wilson and Ken Johnston as candidates for Larne Lough.
