Mid Ulster council co-ordinating response to refugee crisis

The plight of the thousands of people fleeing war-torn Syria as well as other countries in conflict has led the Council to convene a meeting of relevant agencies, community, church and charity groups to ensure the region is prepared should refugees come to the area.

Speaking in advance of the meeting which is to be held next month, Chair of the Council, Councillor Linda Dillon, said: “While we may not be called upon to provide a new home for refugees caught up in the current crisis, we do need to be ready should the eventuality arrive and this meeting will bring together the relevant agencies and groups to ensure that Mid Ulster has a well-thought out response in place.

“It will also be an opportunity for us to consider how best to contribute to the relief effort, whether by continuing to donate practical items or by encouraging financial aid and fundraising activity.”

Emphasising how much impact even a small donation can make, Councillor Dillon, continued: “This truly is a case of every little helps. It would only take 30 of us to give £1 each to ensure an entire family has sleeping bags. 70 of us giving £1 would get that same family mats so they don’t have to sleep on the floor. 350 of us would ensure that family had a tent.

“Together we can make a real difference to the lives of people who, through no fault of their own, are suffering enormous hardship. The people of Mid Ulster have already responded generously and I know they will continue to do so”.
