Part of National Composting Week (4-10 May), the compost give-away aims to raise awareness of composting as a way for households to reduce the amount of waste they send to landfill sites, either by composting at home or making full use of their brown bins for disposing of all their food scraps, as well as their green garden waste.

The compost on offer has been provided courtesy of NWP (Armagh) and is the end product of green waste collected through brown bins, helping to demonstrate the value of the scheme, as Chair of the Council’s Environment Committee, Councillor Christine McFlynn, explained: “Around 20% of the waste in black bins is mostly food scraps going needlessly to landfill instead of being collected through brown bins and being turned back into something so useful.

“Seeing for yourself the result of your recycling efforts is a great way to encourage people to keep on recycling or for others to start. I’m delighted Mid Ulster District Council is supporting National Composting Week and that our residents are benefiting”.

Mid Ulster residents can use their kitchen caddies to put all their plate scrapings and food scraps in, whether raw or cooked. Once it is full, the contents can simply be emptied into the brown bin, along with green garden waste and cold ashes.

For anyone who would like to compost at home, home composting bins are available free of charge from each of the Council’s depots at Burn Road Cookstown, Oaks Road Dungannon and Ballyronan Road Magherafelt.

Loose and/or bagged compost will be available on Saturday 2 May while stocks last, from:

Cookstown Recycling Centre

Magherafelt Recycling Centre

Drumcoo Recycling Centre (Dungannon)

Fivemiletown Recycling Centre
