Already offering world class mountain bike trails, the forest has been identified as an area with potential for enhanced leisure activities, from walking to experiencing the ‘dark skies’ at night and two public meetings are now being held (Wednesday 9th September) to explore ideas with the local community and interested individuals.

“The Mid Ulster region has become synonymous with quality mountain biking, with trails at Blessingbourne in Fivemiletown and at Davagh, and both have proved to be a huge draw for mountain bikers, as well as leisure walkers and families,” said Councillor Frances Burton, Chair of the Council’s Development Committee.

“Having been established as a key visitor attraction in the heart of the Sperrins, Davagh has enormous potential for further sympathetic development and this is an opportunity for the local community to give us their views before we progress to undertaking economic appraisals of the options and identifying sources of funding”.

The consultation sessions are being facilitated on behalf of the Council by Outdoor Recreation NI, who will present initial proposals for feedback and discussion.

Outdoor Recreation NI’s, Chris Scott, said: “As an organisation we have a wealth of experience in managing and developing outdoor recreation and without question, Davagh Forest holds incredible tourism potential.

“However we believe passionately that any new developments must also meet the needs of the local community. This is the time for people to share their opinions with us and so we would encourage members of the local community to join us at this consultation”.

The public meeting will be held in the Broughderg Community Centre on Wednesday 9th September and will be split into two sessions.

The first session, held from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, will focus on the potential further development of mountain biking trails and facilities within Davagh Forest.

The second session, from 7.30pm to 8.30pm, will then be used to discuss the potential development of wider recreation opportunities such as walking trails, play, dark skies and visitor services.
