The SDLP man said that Minister Danny Kennedy’s department has promised to undertake the work as early as possible in the next financial year.

Mr McGlone said: “The approach road surface into Ballyronan has deteriorated significantly in recent weeks. It is a well used road, and my office has received an increasing number of complaints from local residents about the poor condition of the road surface.

“As a result, I have been in contact with Roads Service [TransportNI] to highlight concerns about the deteriorating surface and the increased risk to all road users and local residents.

“In response Roads Service has confirmed that the road features highly on their programme for resurfacing in the next financial year.

“In addition they have said that they hope to be able to schedule this necessary work to be done as early as possible this Spring.

“In the meantime Roads Service have also committed to inspecting the road and repairing any serious defects to keep it safe in the short term.

“On behalf of the local community I wish to thank Roads Service for their continued commitment to maintaining our rural road network in difficult financial times,” he went on.

“Our rural roads form an important lifeline for local communities and enable our rural economy to flourish [and] the SDLP will continue to lobby on behalf of local communities to ensure that our rural roads network is maintained to the highest possible standard.”

Cllr Christine McFlynn, added: “We will continue to monitor the road condition and keep in contact with Road Service, as we don’t want, like other areas, to have any more damaged tyres or wheels on vehicles.”
