Councillor Mallaghan has opened the book to allow local people to express their sympathies and their opposition to racism without having to compromise their adherence to COVID-19 guidance on gatherings and social distancing:

“First and foremost, George Floyd’s death was a needless tragedy and is a great personal loss to his family, friends and community in Minneapolis.

“The manner of his death has, however, led to a huge outpouring of support across with world, with people wishing to show their solidarity with the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement and their complete rejection of racism, regardless of where it happens or who the perpetrator is.

“In the current circumstances, where encouraging people to visit a building to sign a traditional book of condolence is not appropriate, an online book will still allow members of our community express their condolences meaningfully”.
