Mid Ulster UKIP candidate opposes ‘abortion liberalisation’ of High Court ruling

Named as one of UKIP’s 15 candidates for the forthcoming Northern Ireland Assembly elections, Coagh-based Day said he is fully behind the party’s ‘Better Off Out’ campaign “to leave the costly and undemocratic European Union”.

“If elected I promise to oppose the liberalisation of abortion law in Northern Ireland as seen today in the Courts,” he said.

This is despite the ruling being welcomed by midwives across Northern Ireland.

Commenting on the judgment, Breedagh Hughes, Director for Northern Ireland at the Royal College of Midwives (RCM), said: “The failure by the Northern Ireland Assembly to resolve this issue and legislate on it, or even to provide guidance as to how the law should be applied in clinical practice, has left midwives and other health care professionals in a very difficult position for a very long time.

“Consequently, today’s ruling is extremely welcome. It now gives midwives and other health professionals legal protection and a release from the fear of prosecution. This will enable midwives to offer women who have a diagnosis of fatal foetal anomaly the appropriate care, support and advice that they also have often been denied because of the Assembly’s inertia.”

Mr Day’s candidacy was announced by MLA David McNarry MLA during his speech at the UKIP NI conference on November 21.

He has previously stood for the party in Mid Ulster at the Westminster elections and for Mid Ulster Council.

The IT technician has also hit out at Northern Ireland’s other parties for “sitting on the fence” over membership of the EU.
