Mid Ulster Volunteers- Our local heroes

OLDER people across Mid-Ulster have been giving up their time to help others through their volunteering efforts.

Tenants at Giboney Court and Sperrin Court in Cookstown, Ardnaskea Court Coalisland and Brennan Court in Magherafelt continue to give up their time to help a variety of charities and community based organisations by participating in Volunteer Now’s Mobile Volunteering initiative.

Cancer Focus, Tidy Northern Ireland, Rural Community Network and RNIB are organisations that have benefited from the assistance provided by the volunteering groups.

Eliza Threlfall, Unlocking Potential Development Officer, Volunteer Now said; ”Mobile Volunteering allows groups of people that get together already in the community to take part in volunteering within the security and safety of their own surroundings. Charitable and community based organisations are stretched at the moment and are always looking for volunteers. These groups provide tasks that are ‘mobile’ and can be taken anywhere for groups to complete. Volunteering as a group is a social outing for many and is really fun!”

Lynsey McCloskey, Campaigns Manager, TIDY Northern Ireland said “Older volunteers supported by Volunteer Now played a crucial role in the Big Spring clean 2013. They undertook the mammoth task of preparing all the clean up kits that were distributed to every volunteer, community group and school who registered an event on the BIG Spring Clean Website. Since the beginning of March a staggering 500 packs were sent out! Without the support of volunteers, campaigns such as the BIG Spring Clean would not be a success. TIDY Northern Ireland would like to thank all the volunteers for their hard work.”
