Mid Ulster’s environment chair urges locals not to drop litter from cars

The comment comes after the committee’s first ever meeting, but as well as encouraging people to think before throwing rubbish out the window, Cllr Christine McFlynn is urging residents and visitors to put litter in the bins provided - both at home and on the streets.

And she is also urging locals to “make full use of the recycling sites and bins provided by the council”.

Just two weeks ago this paper revealed the £1.9m cost of taking care of just Cookstown’s rubbish over the course of 2014 in an article on council expenditure.

“There are huge costs involved in recycling, collecting general household waste and the added expense of gathering litter discarded along the roadside.

“A little environmental awareness when disposing of litter and waste goes a long way.

“I would urge everyone to make full use of the recycling sites and bins provided by the council. Do not drop litter from vehicles, take it home and dispose of it appropriately.”

“We can all do our bit to help reduce those costs and to improve the environment at the same time.”
