Calling for preventative measures, the newly appointed MLA said: “Suicide does not just affect the person whose life has been lost, but it is a tragedy for a much wider circle of family and friends. I am aware of a number of people recently in the Londonderry area who have recently attempted to end their lives by suicide, and we must be proactive in offering support and services to for those who are contemplating suicide.

“Since taking up my post I have talked to the Health Minister about this issue and I am greatly encouraged by his interest and determination to address this problem.

“We owe a huge debt of gratitude to groups such as Foyle Search and Rescue who have done so much to not only rescue those who have entered the water, but to intervene and prevent people who are considering doing so.”

He added: “I want to ensure that this issue continues to be a priority, particularly within the Londonderry area. The opportunity to bring it to the Assembly chamber within the next few weeks will hopefully help to bring forward new ideas on how we can help those who feel they have no other option than to contemplate suicide, and I particularly look forward to hearing from the Health Minister on plans for the future.”
