Middleton sad at net bullying death

Foyle DUP MLA Gary Middleton said this week that he was very saddened to hear of the death of Tyrone schoolboy Ronan Hughes following online bullying.

The schoolboy is understood to have taken his own life after being tricked into posting images online.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the 17-year-old, from Coalisland, who died on Friday.

His funeral, yesterday, Tuesday, took place at St Patrick’s Church in Clonoe, where he and his brother Cathal were altar boys.

Mr Middleton said: “I pass on my deep sympathy to the family and friends of Ronan Hughes. It is very concerning that a schoolboy from County Tyrone has taken his own life as a result of online bullying.

“This once again highlights the dangers with social media and the faceless individuals hiding behind fake profiles. I would urge all young people and members of the public to be cautious of who they interact with online and report any suspicious activity.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends at this difficult time.”

The priest who officiated at the funeral told mourners people had taken advantage of Ronan and exploited him.
