Milk workers go on strike

A STRIKE by workers in Creamline Ltd over a pay dispute halted door to door deliveries in December 1974.

The dispute concerned a pay rise which the men had been seeking for some time.

Their basic rate of pay for a 40 hour week was £23.69 which a spokesman described as ‘an insult in this day and age’.

The men said it just wasn’t enough for them to maintain a decent standard of living for their families.

One man pointed out that after rent for his house had been paid there wasn’t much left.

“The only Christmas presents my children will see this year will be in the shop windows,” he said.

The workers were asking for a basic wage of around £40 per week.
