Minister meets committeeoverseeing new council

ENVIRONMENT Minister Alex Attwood has met the committee overseeing plans for the new Lisburn and Castlereagh ‘super council’.

Mr Attwood said the programme to reform local government had moved a further step forward last week as the boundaries of the 11 new councils were approved by the Assembly.

The Minister heard of the progress of the Committee and addressed issues around transferring functions to local government, programme funding and managing the impact of rates convergence.

Mr Attwood continued: “We’re moving into a critical implementation phase. I believe it’s important that I visit each Voluntary Transition Committee to ensure that preparations continue at a local level to effectively deliver the programme.”

The Chairman of the VTC, Alderman James Tinsley, said: “There is significant work ahead and the Committee requires clear direction in order to progress the Review as the programme unfolds and as the legislative framework for the boundaries is in place. We were delighted to welcome the Minister to the meeting.”

Vice Chairman, Alderman Michael Henderson, said: “Each new Council area will have its specific and individual areas which will require discussion and consideration from the Minister. A number of questions from the committee were also put to the Minister.”
