Minister opens new community facilities in Coleraine

SOCIAL Development Minister Nelson McCausland has opened new community facilities in Coleraine’s East and Churchlands areas.

A new play park in Ballysally and a mutli-use games area in Millburn and Millburn Community Centre received a total of £390,000 funding from the NI Executive, through the Department for Social Development.

During his visit to Coleraine, Minister McCausland said: “I am pleased that my Department has contributed to providing these facilities within the community which will not only benefit the local residents but enhance the physical environment where they live.

“These much needed recreational facilities will be a major boost to the young people in the area and assist to improve healthy active lifestyles.”

The Mayor of Coleraine, Councillor David Harding, said: “As Mayor of Coleraine, I am delighted to be here today to celebrate the formal launch of the new Ballysally Play Park and Millburn Multi-Use Games Area and the refurbished Millburn Community Centre.

“Coleraine Borough Council’s partnership with the Department for Social Development Neighbourhood Renewal section has secured funds for projects in the two Neighbourhood Renewal Areas as part of Council’s Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership.

“Council has endeavoured to develop play facilities for children in the Borough and this particular multi-use play area fulfills all the criteria for young people to learn, play and grow.

“On behalf of Council, I hope that local residents enjoy these wonderful new facilities for years to come.”

Ian Donaghey, Chair of Coleraine Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership said: “Coleraine Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership is thrilled to see the hard work that has gone on in the Ballysally and Millburn areas to bring a new Play Park, a new Multi-Use Games Area and the refurbishment of Millburn Community Association.

“We have listened to the residents in the areas and have worked with our partners to make sure that the funding from the Department for Social Development is used to put in place the things that are most wanted and needed in the areas.

“We hope that these projects start to make a difference in the areas and that they continue to make a difference for years to come.”
