Minister sees Hillsborough traffic problems for himself

RESIDENTS have met Regional Development minister Danny Kennedy in Hillsborough to air their views on the damage being caused by large HGV lorries and additional traffic using the village as a ‘rat run’ at peak times.

The Minister was joined by representatives from the PSNI, Tourism NI, business owners and local representatives to discuss the negative impact residents say it is having on the village and their lives.

Local MLA Brenda Hale, who organised the meeting with the Minister, said: “We must act now before Hillsborough becomes a no go area for local people and children due to the dangers caused by the lorries and additional traffic.

“Having spoken with the PSNI and the Tourist Board it is clear that this issue is having a major impact on not only those who live in Hillsborough but for those who wish to visit our village and view what it has to offer.

“Since my election in May 2011, I have constantly lobbied both the Minister for the Environment, Alex Attwood and the DRD Minister, Danny Kennedy, on the road traffic issues that plague the village and the surrounding areas.

“I welcome the fact the DRD Minister has visited Hillsborough to view the issues for himself and hopefully work towards solutions for the residents in the area.

One local resident, Mr Brian Strong, said: “It is unacceptable that a solution cannot be found to ensure that the historic buildings, conservation areas and the residents living in Hillsborough cannot be protected from the dangers and hazards presented from large HGV lorries and additional traffic coming through here.”

He added: “Those living in Hillsborough and the Culcavy Road area have become increasingly frustrated at the inaction of the Department of Regional Development. We hope that the Minister will take on board the concerns of the Hillsborough community, who want to see a long-term solution to the outstanding issues, not a quick-fix.”
