Minister to hear of insulation concerns

THE SOCIAL Development Minister Alex Attwood is to visit residents at Carson Court in Lisburn to listen to their concerns about inadequate insulation in their homes.

Residents say they need double glazed windows in their homes to replace what they say is inadequate single glazing.

MLA Paul Givan said he has now been told Mr Attwood intends to visit the residents and surrounding developments to listen to their concerns.

The visit will come after Lisburn Councillor Paul Stewart called on the Department for Social Development to fund the Northern Ireland Housing Executive to allow them to install double glazing in the pensioners' homes.

Mr Stewart said many residents in Carson Court had been left cold during the recent bad spell and urged the Minister to treat the matter as urgent and take action swiftly.

"In many homes across the city pensioners are living in unacceptable conditions" Mr Stewart said. "Often this is due to the loss of heat through their windows and with the cost of fuel many pensioners are suffering.

"In the 21st Century we need to be looking after our pensioners and personally I believe the Northern Ireland Housing Executive is unfortunately failing in this regard."

Mr Stewart said he feared for the health of older people if the winter continues to be severe.
