Minister visits Southern Area Hospice

Health Minister, Edwin Poots MLA, recently visited the Southern Area Hospice at its premises in St John’s House, Newry.

During the visit the Minister was given a tour of the facility and had the opportunity to meet with local people who use the Hospice and its services.

He also met with Hospice management and staff and heard how its services are delivered both at the Hospice itself and in the community.

The Minister said: “Hospices play an important part in delivering excellence in end of life care as patients live with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

“I am committed to more personalised care for people at the end of life whether that is in a hospital, hospice or community setting. The Southern Area Hospice is an excellent example of how this care should be provided.

Patients can also choose where they receive their care, either here at St John’s House, Newry, Out-patient clinics at South Tyrone, Daisy Hill or Craigavon Area Hospital or at home and in their own community.”

The Minister recognised the key role that the voluntary and community sector has to play. He said: “The contribution and support which organisations like the Southern Area Hospice offer to the Health Service are invaluable. Working in partnership with the voluntary and community sector is essential to sustain quality end of life care for many people.”
