Minister’s decision about Magilligan is softening - McQuillan

ALTHOUGH no final decision has been made on the future of Magilligan Prison, a Coleraine councillor says he believes that the Minister’s decision is softening.

DUP councillor and MLA Adrian McQuillan made the comments at last Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Members were updated on the Magilligan issue, and told about a delegation, from Coleraine, Ballymoney and Limavady Councils, that had met Justice Minister, David Ford back in October.

Just last week, a petition was presented to the Minister at Stormont by members of the Prison Officers Association.

At last Tuesday night’s meeting, councillor McQuillan said that it was important to keep “the pressure” on the Minister.

DUP Alderman James McClure added: “We have to press this as hard as we can.

“There could be a lot of people out of work if Magilligan closes, we must pursue every angle.”

Independent councillor David McClarty added: “I honestly believe it will be kept on.

“It shows the strength of all parties working together for a common cause.”
