Colonel Mitchelburne played a prominent role in the Siege as joint Governor. He is credited with flying the Crimson Flag from St Columb’s Cathedral in 1689 and forming the first Apprentice Boys of Derry Club in 1714, making him founding father of the Association.

The Mitchelburne Parent Club has designated June as a charity month and many events were organised to mark the Tercentenary, with money raised going to the Apprentice Boys Benevolent Fund.
