MLA asks: ‘Will £23k Seacourt tribunal award impact on Cliff?’

EAST Antrim Assembly member Oliver McMullan has asked for an assurance that a tribunal compensation award against Seacourt Community Council will not impact on The Cliff project.

The Sinn Fein MLA’s written question to Larne Borough Council has been referred to the local authority’s legal advisers, who are already dealing with a notice of judicial review from the board at The Cliff.

In March, the Office of Tribunals awarded £23,782.65 to Joanne Christie, formerly an administrator at the Seacourt community group, after deciding that she had been unfairly dismissed.

Seacourt Community Council was the driving force behind the state-of-the-art sports and recreation facilities at The Cliff and its chairman, Bertie Shaw, also chairs the Cliff board.

Mr McMullan asked for Larne Council’s assurance “that there will be no liability on The Cliff or any other group associated with The Cliff project” as a result of the compensation award.

The Cliff board is in dispute with the council over a leasing agreement.

Mr Shaw, meanwhile, is contesting a charge of common assault on council chief executive Geraldine McGahey.

The case is listed for hearing at Larne Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (Friday).
