MLA calls for Irish Passport Office in the North

Sinn Féin MLA Bronwyn McGahan has renewed the call for an Irish Passport office in the North after she ascertained that over 125,000 people from the North applied for one over a three-year period.

The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA said: “The number of people applying for Irish passports is increasing and with the census figures highlighting a growth in the number of people from the Nationalist community this will continue to grow.

“The time has now come for this growing number of people to be serviced with a dedicated passport office in the North which would allow quick access to a passport.

“These figures also highlight the fact that hundreds of thousands of people are being disenfranchised due to fact that they cannot vote of Irish Presidential elections or referendum.

“It is time that the Irish Government took their responsibility to these people serious and ensured that they have the same rights as other Irish citizens on the island.”
