MLA helps to promote science in schools

LAGAN Valley MLA Basil McCrea recently helped to promote science and technology among primary school children at an event in Stormont.

Science and Technology Experts in Primary Schools (STEPS) brings together primary schools and experts to show school children the fun of science.

“This was a really great event,” said Mr McCrea. “It was fantastic to see the children showing an interest in everything from clean energy to cheese production. We still have a huge skills gap in science and technology industries, this is where future jobs will be.

“Programmes such as this, and the work organisations such as Sentinus do, are extremely valuable, but we should be doing more to excite our children and young people about science. We must do more to promote science and technology in primary and secondary schools.”

Key speakers at the event were Basil McCrea MLA, Joanne Stuart (STEM Implementation Steering Group), Paul McCrory (Learn Differently: The Wonder of Science), Sheila Gilheany (Institute of Physics in Ireland) and Paul Denley (AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust).
