MLA lobbies for flood alleviation

Prolonged heavy rain two weeks ago caused the swollen river to damage properties close to where it flows into the sea.

Sinn Fein councillor and MLA Oliver McMullan this week welcomed a Rivers Agency report on the incident and revealed he is to meet with officials soon.

“The recent difficulties of flooding that the residents of Carnlough have had to endure came as no surprise to anyone,” he said. “I have been calling for the Drainage Council to rescind their decision of not allowing a designation line in the Cranny River. Designation would enable the agencies to draw down resources for flood alleviation measures.

“I’ve asked the Rivers Agency to set up a meeting to discuss this and other issues concerning recent flooding in the Carnlough area and the mid-Glens including Cushendall, Glenariff and Cushendun. Discussion needs to be centred on how we can focus on the long-term drainage in this area,” he concluded.
