He said: “Amateur sports clubs are at the heart of many communities here in County Antrim and they do not get full recognition for the service they provide to the community.

“They are key to improving people’s health and wellbeing through sport, fitness and increased social contact. They are a public service.

“They save councils thousands of pounds in sports facilities that they would otherwise have to provide. That is one reason why this exemption should be introduced.

“I hope to secure the backing of the Assembly this week to progress this Bill to its next stage after its first debate in the house.

“This will apply to a variety of clubs including soccer, rugby, GAA, boxing, cycling, martial arts and many more. It is a progressive piece of legislation and it does not come as a huge cost to the public purse.”
