Two men were arrested following the recovery of a weapon during a security alert on the Barnfield Road last Friday.

Army bomb experts were called to examine the suspicious object and the area was closed for a time.

Three men in west Belfast and a woman in Dunmurry were also arrested but were later released without charge.

Mr Craig said, “For some time there has been dissident activity in the West Belfast/Lisburn area resulting in several attacks on serving police officers by dissident republicans and I know that the exceptional work of the Serious Crime Branch in this case has saved lives and has been instrumental in these arrests and the weapons find.

“As a member of the Policing Board, I am all too aware of the commitment and dedication our men and women of the PSNI have in serving the whole community and putting those individuals and organisations that are carrying out terrorist attacks before the courts.”

Mr Craig added, “This is a time for politicians and the wider community to support the PSNI and through intelligence led policing, working together we can see more such arrests as we saw on Friday in the Barnfield Road area.

“I would urge anyone with information that can help the police with their enquiries to contact the PSNI or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
