MLA Robinson highlights importance of BBC documentary

The site is the former RAF base at Eglinton, which featured in a recent BBC documentary, ‘Dig WW2 with Dan Snow’.

Responding to the MLA, Minister Attwood said he would get his department to look at the merits of listing the base.

Robinson added: “I thank the Minister for his answer and welcome the positive response I received from him.

“The BBC programme has uncovered a part of Limavady’s history which has been overlooked by many in recent years.

“The programme highlighted the essential role that RAF Limavady and Northern Irelands airfields in general, played in protecting the convoys from the North Atlantic.

“This is a part of the history of both WW2 and Limavady, and I believe should be protected where possible. The programme has opened many eyes to our rich heritage, and we should examine ways in which we can use this heritage to create tourist attractions and history based learning.

“Utilising the old buildings would be ideal if it were financially sensible. I certainly believe the dome used to train anti-aircraft gunners has to not just be protected, but perhaps restored to original condition, as my information is it one of only two remaining in the United Kingdom – therefore a site of huge importance nationally.

“Hopefully we can see in the next few years the treasures on our doorstep recognised for the part they played in securing victory in WW2 and protecting the lives of mariners thus ensuring the history is available for future generations to utilise” concluded Mr. Robinson.
