MLA urges voters in Mid Ulster to register as election looms

Sinn Féin MLA Ian Milne has called on people to make sure they are registered to vote in the upcoming Assembly election.

Mr Milne said; “In May people will go to the polls to elect members to the Assembly and this is a opportunity for people to have their voice heard.

“We have an historic opportunity to radically change the politics of Ireland and to realise the commitment made in the 1916 Proclamation to ‘cherish all children of the nation equally’.

“However this can only be done if you are registered to vote, have the proper identification and are at home to vote.

“I urge constituents to ensure that they are registered to vote, that they have the correct ID and if you have plans to be away in the coming months to contact your local elected representative to seek a postal or proxy vote.

“If people, particularly students, are not going to be at home on polling day to apply for a postal or proxy vote.

“Forms can be downloaded from the electoral office site on www.eoni.org.uk or by attending your local electoral office.”

The Mid Ulster assembly man added: “The right to vote is a democratic imperative that was hard won so people should exercise their right on May 5th and ensure that we continue to bring about further change to improve our society.”

The following month, voters in Mid Ulster will join the rest of the UK when they go to the polls to decide on the future of Europe.
