MLA welcomes autism group's first meeting

SOUTH Down Ulster Unionist health spokesperson John McCallister MLA, has welcomed news that parents and carers will have their say in how autism services can be improved in Northern Ireland.

Speaking after the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Reference Group's first meeting, Mr McCallister commended his Party colleague, Health Minister Michael McGimpsey, on his commitment to improving the treatment and care of those who are affected by autism.

"I welcome the fact that Minister McGimpsey has been able to secure an additional 2.02million for autism services. Indeed, last autumn the Department of Health published a comprehensive Autism Action Plan and that is now being implemented. However, in order for the improvements set out in that plan to be effective and worthwhile, it is imperative that all people affected by autism - either personally or professionally - work together.

"This includes those parents who tirelessly care for children affected by the disability and those people in the voluntary sector who have developed an excellent understanding of the impact of autism, through first hand experience."

The South Down MLA joined the Minister in expressing his thanks to UUP peer Lord Maginnis for taking this key work forward.
