MLA welcomes Crumlin college closure delay

A South Antrim Ulster Unionist MLA has welcomed the North Eastern Education and Library Board’s decision to delay the closure of Crumlin Integrated College.

This move comes as it was revealed college principal Annabel Scott fled from her home following a death threat.

Danny Kinahan, Vice-Chair of the Stormont Education Committee, said he hoped the decision would give campaigners another month’s grace to save the school.

A public meeting, attended by up to 100 people, was held at the school this week and saw the formation of a new committee which plans to lobby the Education Minister John O’Dowd. Already one pupil has written to the Prime Minister David Cameron and Secretary of State Theresa Villiers.

Mr Kinahan hopes that should a decision for closure be made it be made for 2015 to give parents more time.

Parents do not know what is happening which is very unfair for them,” he said.

“We have been given a month and we should spend that time wisely.

“If the decision comes that the school will close then why not wait for another year and close in 2015.

“Last week when it was revealed that Crumlin Integrated College was being ear-marked for closure I called for a proper consultation to be carried out before any final decision is taken so that all parents of existing pupils and future pupils and future parents are given the opportunity to have their views heard. I am delighted that the NEELB has listened and decided to delay a closure decision.

“There is no question that great improvements have been made since the last inspection report. I am convinced the school can have a bright future if it is given a chance. Last year the school had a 61 per cent pass rate.”

A spokesperson for the board said: “Following extensive consideration the Board has agreed to further its consideration at a special meeting to which other educational stakeholders will be invited to attend. The Board remains committed to working with its education partners.”
