MLA welcomes latest step towards rail service upgrade

EAST Antrim MLA Ken Robinson has welcomed news that Northern Ireland Railways' new Class 4000 trains are well in production.

Translink recently confirmed that passengers who use the Larne Line, which serves Whiteabbey and Jordanstown, will be the first to benefit when the new trains start to enter service here.

Councillor Robinson, who has long campaigned for the retention and upgrade of the Larne Line, said: “I am pleased that the 20 new trains will all be in service by 2012 to replace the 13 older models that are still a frequent sight on the East Antrim route.

“I have repeatedly reminded the Minister for Regional Development and Translink officials that the Larne Line should receive the benefits of these new trains as soon as they are commissioned.”

The UUP man added: “The success of the Class 3000 trains which became operational in 2005 proves that, with investment, the public will use sustainable mass transportation systems such as the railways.”
