MLA's hear of lack of physio treatment for MS sufferers

LOCAL MLAs were welcomed to the Coleraine branch of the MS Society NI last week to hear about the biggest issue currently facing people with MS - access to physiotherapy.

A Northern Ireland wide survey carried out recently by the MS Society NI demonstrated that people with MS are disadvantaged through the absence of adequate physiotherapy provision.

Assemblymen John Dallat and Gregory Campbell, were given the opportunity to hear first hand how the lack of access in the area was impacting on the quality of lives for people with MS.

Clare McBride Northern Area Development Officer for the MS Society NI, speaking at the visit, said, “I’m delighted that our local MLAs have taken the time to see the work of our Coleraine branch and the challenges we face.

“MS is the single biggest cause of disability here and put simply, the provision of physiotherapy just isn’t sufficient.

“We are keen to gain support from as many MLAs as possible to ensure people with MS in the area have a service that is as fair and equitable as the rest of the UK.

“The costs involved to resolve this deficit in provision are miniscule in comparison with the overall Health budget, and will be far outweighed in terms of potentially maintaining people with MS in employment, minimising disabilities and improving quality of life.”

SDLP East Derry MLA John Dallat revealed that only 1% of MS sufferers’ benefit from physiotherapy treatment more than once a week, Mr Dallat said:

“This is a shocking state of affairs which requires the urgent attention of the Health Minister who is well aware of the benefits of physiotherapy for MS sufferers.

“During the meeting we heard heart-rending stories from MS patients who have massively benefited from physiotherapy when received on a regular basis.

“The astonishing fact is that 42% of physiotherapists are without jobs.

“I have tabled questions to the Health Minister and would be hopeful that the he will demonstrate compassion by coming to the aid of the courageous people who bear the burden of MS with great patience and fortitude.”
