Moffatt murder: PE date

THE preliminary enquiry for the man charged with the murder of Coleraine pensioner Norman Moffatt back in 2011 is on target to take place on December 17.

The PE, to be held at North Antrim Magistrates’ Court will decide whether or not a prima facie case exists against 42-year-old James Alexander McCook.

Mr Moffatt (73) was stabbed as he walked home from buying his morning paper at Circular Road in Coleraine.

The pensioner was stabbed in the stomach and died two months later in hospital.

McCook was charged with the pensioners murder after he was arrested in Lancashire earlier this year.

He had previously been charged with the murder, however charges were withdrawn.

In total McCook, who has a string of offences on his record, has spent over 500 days in remand for the pensioners murder.

On Monday at North Antrim Magistrates’ Court, defence barrister, Mr O’Neill agreed to take the case for one week to December 10 to allow PE papers to be served.
