More delays for Ploughing match event

THE traditional New Year's Day ploughing competition organised by Ballycastle and District Tractor Ploughing Society will take place, but the organisers simply don't know when.

The present weather conditions caused the postponement of the event which was scheduled to be held on land at Bushmills and the continuation of the ice and snow has led to further delays.

However, Brian Simpson, an official of the Ploughing Society, said the match would go ahead at some point when there was a thaw.

“We know that if the snow and ice disappeared we would be able to go on to the land at Bushmills within a day; that’s how good the ground is, but it’s really out of our hands,” Mr. Simpson told the Times.

With a number of other scheduled ploughing matches due to take place throughout the Province, the local organisers will have to make sure their event doesn’t clash.

“We cannot overlap, but we need to get ours going because there are ranking points for the ploughmen,” Mr. Simpson added.

The annual dinner and presentation of prizes was due to take place on Saturday, January 22 at the Causeway Hotel, but that date may now need to be reviewed.
