More fines for smoking in taxis

THE number of fixed penalty notices issued in Londonderry for smoking in smoke-free vehicles sharply increased to 35 last year, according to the Environment Minister Alex Attwood.

Whilst the ban on smoking in taxis and public vehicles was introduced in 2007 no fixed penalty notices were issued in 2007/8; only seven were issued in 2008/9 and in 2009/10 less than five were issued.

Last year, however, 35 fixed penalty notices were issued for smoking in a smoke-free vehicle the last financial year according to the Public Safety Minister Edwin Poots.

He outlined the figures in response to an Assembly Question.
