Slemish College students once again achieved excellent results with 93% of students achieving five or more pass grades at GCSE.

Principal Dr Paul McHugh was delighted with the performance, stating: “An outstanding 80% of GCSE students achieved five or more GCSEs at Grade A* to C. Once again we are delighted with the value added to individual student performance with many students exceeding all expectations including those of performance indicators.

“In particular I would like to congratulate Sarah Currie (6A*s, 2As, 1B), Megan Palmer (5A*s, 2 As, 2Bs), Owen Agnew (2 A*s, 7 A’s, 1 B), Mark Clements (3A*s,3As, 4Bs), Jenny Black (3A*s, 5As, 1B, 1C), Meghan McAllister (1A*, 5A’s, 3Bs), Louise Brown (5A’s, 2Bs, 2Cs), Alastair Dempsey (7As, 3Bs), Kieran Thompson (7A’s, 2B and 1C), Tammie Girvin (6A’s, 4B’s), Kerri Simpson (5A’s, 3Bs and 1 C), and Christopher Harkin (2A*s, 6A’s, 2Bs).

“Each of these students excelled not just in terms of their academic achievement but also as members of our school community demonstrating high levels of Citizenship.”

Dr McHugh added: “I am also delighted that individual subject areas such as ICT, Physical Education, Statistics and The Princes Trust Programme achieved 100% Grades A* to C whilst of those studying English Literature, almost half achieved Grade As or A*s.

“There are also significant improvements in many areas including Additional Maths which achieved 76% A*- C, Additional Science which achieved 91% A* to C and Music in which 88% of students achieved Grades A* to C.

“We have implemented a number of strategies to enable our students to fulfil their potential including a rigorous tracking and mentoring system. Students have also had access to excellent pastoral support which has nurtured them and encouraged them to be focussed, independent learners, who are ready to undertake future challenges, academic and vocational.

“Those students who undertook courses such as Horse Care and Occupational Studies at the Northern Regional College are also to be commended for their achievements with all students achieving passes at the highest level and we would like to express our thanks to the Northern Regional College.”

Dr McHugh concluded: “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all our students who undertook external exams. I would also like to offer sincere thanks to the parents, staff and Board of Governors at Slemish College for it is our unique partnership founded on commitment and mutual support that has ensured the continuing success of each and every one of our young people.”
