‘More trees needed’

SDLP councillor Dónal Cunningham is to ask Moyle District Council to investigate the opportunities of any available funding schemes and to seek advice on how to improve the woodland cover in the area.

He said: “The North remains one of the least wooded regions in Europe, with a mere 6.4 per cent woodland cover, compared to a European average of 44 per cent.

“Native trees and woodland bring numerous benefits.  They enhance the landscape, provide homes for our precious wildlife, shelter and shade for crops and livestock, improve air quality, and provide timber and wood fuel.”
