The attempt took place in South End on Sea as part of a charity event by Rossi Ice Cream.

The Morelli’s record was set in Portstewart back in July 2011 and coincided with the 100th anniversary of the famous ice-cream business.

According to an official tally, a total of 2,728 supporters indulged in the free ice cream on offer - beating a previous record attained in the United States last year by 34 people.

Held in the grounds of Dominican College, participants stood in an orderly chain holding a tub of ice cream in their right hand and eating from the tub in the hand of the person on their left.

They were required to do so for a whole minute for the attempt to be properly verified.

The English attempt failed meaning Northern Ireland can hang on to the record!
