Mothers' Union celebrates 50 years

THE members of Ballyward Mothers' Union took great pleasure in celebrating their 50th anniversary this month.

An anniversary celebration service was held in Drumgooland Parish Church last week at Drumgooland Parish Church. Afterwards members, parishioners and friends all enjoyed supper in the Church Hall.

The local branch of Mother’s Union was established in June 1960 with the first meeting taking place in September that year.

The meeting was attended by 29 people, two of whom Mrs Lily Singer and Mrs Jean Walker, are still active members today.

The Branch was formed by Mrs Eleanor Leckey, wife of the then Rector, was Enrolling Member from 1960 until 1963. Some of the enrolling members over the years were Mrs Brenda Hall, Mrs Rosemary Rudd, Mrs Anne Neill, Mrs Carol McKegney, Mrs Shelagh Wilson, Mrs Lily Singer.

The Ballyward group regularly hosts guest speakers, musical events and other activities. They also link up with various charities, currently supporting Women’s Aid in Newry.

The present Enrolling Member (now known as Branch Leader) Joyce Quinn, said the group, which currently has around 17 members, is very encouraging of other ladies in the Parish who wish to become involved with the Worldwide Christian Organisation.

“We enjoy fellowship together and the contribution of various speakers at our meetings and visits to other Church Groups adds to the enjoyment,” said Joyce.

“We do need the support of younger ladies of the parish so that the Mothers’ Union Branch will be able to celebrate another 50 years.”

Mother’s Union is an organisation of 3.6million Christians in over 78 countries who give money, experience and prayer to support marriage and family life.

A spokesperson said, “We share a vision of a world where God’s love is shown through loving, respectful and flourishing relationships: reaching out to communities, they change lives and bring hope.”
