Mothers’ Union going strong 
after 50 years

The branch was founded by the late Mrs Amy Jameson in September 1963.

Fifty years on, the branch continues to go from strength to strength due to the many dedicated woman, past and present, who have tirelessly given of their time, gifts and energy.

Enrolment member Elizabeth Harrison said: “Each year, we aim to implement a new initiative. This year we hope to extend a warm welcome to newly married couples to join us for a special Christmas evening of food, fun and fellowship.

“Many people assume that the Mothers’ Union’s only role within a parish is to make tea and serve buns. Although we are experts at tea making, the Mothers’ Union contributes, in a meaningful manner, to so many other aspects of parish and community life.

“For example the Mothers’ Union is a place of fellowship and support to our ladies.

“We provide ‘busy bags’ to the children of our congregation during church services, support is available for families during bereavement, a prayer book is presented to new Christened babies, along with the assurance of our prayers for the family.

“Financial support is provided to parishioners engaging in missionary work, gifts are sent to the wives of prisoners at Maghaberry and at Diocesan level, members contribute to a prayer chain which is freely available to all.”

Donaghcloney Mothers’ Union meet on the first Monday of each month and all new members are welcome.

To celebrate their 50th anniversary they are hosting a concert by Live Issue on Saturday, September 28 in Waringstown Parochial Hall at 8pm.

On Sunday, September 29, there will be a service of thanksgiving in Holy Trinity Church in Waringstown at 11.30am. The guest speaker will be Bishop Ken Clarke and everyone is welcome to attend.
