Motorist who drank had'˜panic attack'

A motorist who said he had a couple of drinks at Kelly's when police stopped him at Dunluce Road in Portrush later claimed he was unable to produce a breath sample because he believes he may have suffered a 'panic attack'.

Jonathan Kennedy (38), a kitchen business owner, of Glen Road, Ballyclare, appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court and pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen of breath.

He was stopped at 3.20am on November 8 last year and a defence lawyer said it was not a brazen attempt to avoid giving a sample.

Banning him from the road for 16 months and fining him £400, District Judge Mark Hamill said the defendant will have to employ someone to drive him around in connection with his business.

* A judge said drink driving detected at 10.45am on December 1 last year had the appearance of a “morning after the night before” case.

Jacqueline Elizabeth Elliott (54) of Greenmount Road, Coleraine, appeared at the town’s Magistrates Court and admitted the offence.

She came to police attention after driving erratically at Curragh Road, Aghadowey.

Defence solicitor Fergus McIntosh said his client was part of one the oldest and most respected families in the area.

She was banned from the road for 20 months and fined £400.
